Pulgas Water Temple

The Hetch Hetchy water system provides fresh water for nearly 1.8M people in and around the city of San Francisco from the Hetch Hetchy reservoir located in Yosemite, 160 miles east. Completed in 1934, the system is entirely gravity fed and still owned and operated by the city of San Francisco. The terminus of the system is here, at the Pulgas Water Temple, where the aqueduct empties into the Crystal Springs Reservoir before being transported to local reservoirs inside the city. The temple was designed to have the water exit the aqueduct and spill down marble steps into the reservoir. While the water is now behind security fences, the temple still exists and it’s just a really cool place to marvel at the huge civil projects we once celebrated.
